JHCM Sound Lab
Students explore how we can hear, feel, and see sound waves through interactive and very LOUD sound stations that include: a Theremin, Chladni plates, tuning forks with water, sand and ping pong balls, random instruments and our very own handmade wave gumdrop wave simulator. Students are encouraged to jot notes and observations in their science journals to encourage writing across the curriculum. They design and build their very own instrument using the concepts they explored in the stations with recycled materials. Students play their instruments and describe how the sound waves move through their instrument to produce its unique sound.
*Virtual Update- Program can be adapted to a drop-box program with JHCM teacher led zoom instruction.
Sound Labs: Labs exploring the questions: Can we hear, see and feel sound? Does sound travel through solids, liquids and air? Lab technology includes a Chladni Plate and a Theremin.
Vocabulary: vibration, sound, waves, eardrum, particles, communication, Scientific Method, (higher level vocab may include: volume, pitch, frequency, amplify)
Cross Cutting Concepts: Cause and Effect: Simple tests can be designed to gather evidence to support or refute student ideas about causes.
Science Standards This Program Meets
1-PS4-1 Waves & Their Application in Technologies for Information Transfer
- Grade: 1st Grade
- Discipline: Physical Science
Plan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

About Jackson Hole Children's Museum
This document outlines how our current JHCM programs align to Wyoming State Standards (and NGSS). As TCSD#1 adopts new science curriculum, we can design programs that better fit the standards. Keep in touch, plan ahead, and we can make STEAMy magic happen! All of our lessons include labs that explore the scientific method and an engaging building challenge using recycled materials! *All programs can be adapted to a drop-box program with JHCM teacher led zoom instruction*

What | Our two-hour programs begin with interactive, student-centered scientific method lab stations. They end with big, messy, and material heavy building projects where students utilize newly acquired vocabulary and content while also enhancing their engineering literacy skills. |
When | All year long |
Where | JHCM, TCSD Classroom or Virtual |
Why | Our STEAM programs honor self-discovery in learning by providing the “space” for students to explore and express their learning using their own ideas and creative process. |
