My Uncle’s Cousin’s Mother was a Tulip – 5th Grade

“My Uncle’s Cousin’s Mother was a Tulip “ – 5th Grade:  There are connections and cycles everywhere in the environment.  The air, water, earth and organisms of our planet are deeply interdependent and energy is in constant movement between them  (ESS2-1, LS1-2). During this program we will use raptors as the starting point for a wild ride through food chains and beyond.  We will challenge students to come up with any item or particle on planet Earth that cannot be connected back to the birds in Jackson Hole (PS3-1, LS1-1).  Live raptors, activities/games appropriate for a variety of learners, and FUN are a part of every TRC program.

 NGSS: 5-PS3-1, 5-LS1-1, 5-LS2-1, 5-ESS2-1

Cross Cutting Concepts: (PS3-1) Energy can be transferred in various ways and between objects.  (LS1-1) Matter is transported int, out of, and within systems. (LS2-1, ESS2-1) A system can be described in terms of its components and their interactions.

Disciplinary Core Ideas: (PS3-1) The energy released from food was once energy from the sun.  (LS1-1) Plants acquire their material for growth chiefly from air and water.  (LS2-1, ESS2-1) Food and matter cycles can be traced through any ecosystem.

Practices of Science: Developing and using models, engaging in argument using evidence

Vocabulary: hydrosphere, geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere, food chain, food web, consumer, producer, decomposer, energy flow

Science Standards This Program Meets

5-LS2-1 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics

  • Grade: 5th Grade
  • Discipline: Life Science
Requirements:

5-PS3-1 Energy

  • Grade: 5th Grade
