Read “Owl” About It – 1st Grade
1st Grade: “Read ‘Owl’ About It” – This program can move in a variety of directions, depending on the needs of a group, but owls are the focus. We may explore their incredible vision (1-PS4-1), learn ways in which humans affect their survival for better and for worse (1-LS1-1), investigate how owls are adapted for survival in Jackson Hole (1-LS1-2), and/or we can dive into the natural history of owls, from hatchling to adults (1-LS1-3). This program can be designed to target one, or all, of these standards. We recommend multiple programs if we are going to learn about all four standards. Live raptors, activities/games appropriate for a variety of learners, and FUN are a part of every TRC program.
NGSS: 1-PS4-2, 1-LS1-1, 1-LS1-2, 1, LS1-3
Cross Cutting Concepts:(PS4-2) Simple tests can be designed to gather evidence to support or refute student ideas about causes. (LS1-1) The shape and stability of structures of natural and designed objects are related to their function(s). (LS1-1) Patterns in the natural world can be observed, used to describe phenomena, and used as evidence.
Disciplinary Core Ideas: (PS4-2) Objects can be seen if light is available to illuminate them or if they give off their own light. (LS1-1, 2, 3) All organisms have external parts, used in different ways, to access food, water and air. All organisms grow and develop in different ways and their external parts capture and convey different kinds of information to help them survive.
Practices of Science: Making observations, obtaining, evaluating and communicating information based on scientific observation and designing solutions.
Vocabulary: observation, external, adaptation, survive, needs, protect, mimic, vision, rods, cones, light, Poo-Poo Project (TRC initiative), owlet, cavity
Science Standards This Program Meets
1-LS1-1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structures & Processes
- Grade: 1st Grade
- Discipline: Life Science
Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.

Teton Raptor Center is a non-profit organization located in Wilson, WY. Our work is focused around three pillars of research, rehabilitation, and education. Our education team is ready to deliver on just about any life science topic you could ask for! All programs are prepared and delivered for the grade, standards, and topics requested by the teacher. Program cost for us to travel to your school begins at $145 per program. Do NOT let cost be a reason not to inquire… we will work with you to help find funds for these awesome opportunities!
View All Programs Visit WebsiteWho | Any student, any age - we recommend keeping group size small (i.e. - class rather than assembly) so that we can get to know each group and engage in hands-on activities. |
What | Life Science Lessons, K-5, using live raptors as the “hook”. We can adapt any of the programs listed here to a virtual platform! |
When | We are available year round - most flexible from October 1 - June 1 |
Where | We can come to you! Programs are available anytime, virtually, indoors or outside. Call to inquire about our virtual and in-person opportunities! We will work to meet your needs and bring our fun experiential programs to you in the best and safest way possible. |
Why | Teton Raptor Center uses science every day. We are here to help students draw the connection between concepts and application. We bring the textbook to life. Our education team is ready to work directly with you to ensure our programs are meeting all of your expectations and needs. All STEAM subject areas are incorporated into our lessons. |
