Sound Scouts – 4th Grade
“Sound Scouts” – 4th Grade: – Teton Raptor Center has developed cutting edge technology to listen to the forest without having to be there in person. ‘Sound Scouts’ are recording devices that the TRC research team deploys into the woods for 2 weeks at a time. These devices then “listen” to all of the animal sounds happening and records them for our review back in the lab. During this program we will learn about how we “read” the data (including how the sounds are visually displayed on a screen using wavelength, amplitude, etc… to determine the species type) and what we are learning from this information. This program brings real world science happening right in Teton County to your classroom. Live raptors, activities/games appropriate for a variety of learners, and FUN are a part of every TRC program.
NGSS: 4-PS4-1, 4-LS1-1, 4-LS1-2
Cross Cutting Concepts: (PS4-1) Similarities and differences in patterns can be used to sort and classify natural phenomena. (LS1-1, 2) A system can be described in terms of its components and their interactions.
Disciplinary Core Idea: (PS4-1) Waves are regular patterns of motion. They can differ in amplitude and wavelength. (LS1-1) Plants and animals have both internal and external structures that serve various functions in growth, survival, behavior, and reproduction. (LS1-2) Different sense receptors are specialized for particular kinds of information, which may be then processed by the animal’s brain.
Practices of Science: Developing and using models, engaging in an argument from evidence
Vocabulary: Wavelength, amplitude, sound, adaptation, behavior
Science Standards This Program Meets
4-LS1-1 From Molecules to Organisms: Structure and Processes
- Grade: 4th Grade
- Discipline: Life Science
Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction

4-LS1-2 From Molecules to Organisms: Structure and Processes
- Grade: 4th Grade
- Discipline: Life Science
Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways.

4-PS4-1 Waves and Their Applications in Technology for Information Transfer
- Grade: 4th Grade
- Discipline: Physical Science
Develop a model of waves to describe patterns in terms of amplitude and wavelength and that waves can cause objects to move.

Teton Raptor Center is a non-profit organization located in Wilson, WY. Our work is focused around three pillars of research, rehabilitation, and education. Our education team is ready to deliver on just about any life science topic you could ask for! All programs are prepared and delivered for the grade, standards, and topics requested by the teacher. Program cost for us to travel to your school begins at $145 per program. Do NOT let cost be a reason not to inquire… we will work with you to help find funds for these awesome opportunities!
View All Programs Visit WebsiteWho | Any student, any age - we recommend keeping group size small (i.e. - class rather than assembly) so that we can get to know each group and engage in hands-on activities. |
What | Life Science Lessons, K-5, using live raptors as the “hook”. We can adapt any of the programs listed here to a virtual platform! |
When | We are available year round - most flexible from October 1 - June 1 |
Where | We can come to you! Programs are available anytime, virtually, indoors or outside. Call to inquire about our virtual and in-person opportunities! We will work to meet your needs and bring our fun experiential programs to you in the best and safest way possible. |
Why | Teton Raptor Center uses science every day. We are here to help students draw the connection between concepts and application. We bring the textbook to life. Our education team is ready to work directly with you to ensure our programs are meeting all of your expectations and needs. All STEAM subject areas are incorporated into our lessons. |
