Stay Cool, and Fly On – 2nd Grade

2nd Grade: “Stay Cool, and Fly On” – Birds are expertly adapted for survival.  They are some of nature’s lightest, and most insulated, creatures.  From Antarctic penguins to rainforest parrots, birds have found ways to survive comfortably in almost any habitat known on Earth.  Join the TRC Education team for some hands-on games and experiments to test “How’d they do that?”. Teachers may choose between the topics of flight and temperature as their focus for this program  (2-PS1-1, 2).  We recommend two separate visits if you’d like to explore both flight and temperature.  Live raptors, activities/games appropriate for a variety of learners, and FUN are a part of every TRC program.

NGSS: 2-PS1-, 2-PS1-2

Cross Cutting Concepts: (PS1-1) Patterns in the natural and human designed world can be observed. (PS1-2) Simple tests can be designed to gather evidence to support or refute student ideas about causes.

Disciplinary Core Ideas: (PS1-1) Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties.  (PS1-2) Different properties are suited to different purposes.

Practices of Science: Planning and carrying out investigations, analyzing and interpreting data, constructing explanations and designing solutions, engaging in argument from evidence

Vocabulary: temperature, heat, cool, flight, insulation, feathers, down, skeleton, hollow
