The ‘Eyas’ Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree – 3rd Grade

“The Eyas Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree” – 3rd Grade: A baby hawk or falcon is called an “Eyas”.  The life cycle of birds is both fascinating and complex and raptors are no exception.  This program will explore how the life cycle of birds (3-LS1-1) varies among species (3-LS1-2), using raptors as our primary example.  We will also investigate how raptors are adapted for life in different environments and how traits passed along from their parents make them wonderfully unique (3-LS3-1 and 2).  Live raptors, activities/games appropriate for a variety of learners, and FUN are a part of every TRC program.

NGSS: 3-LS1-1, 3-LS2-1, 3-LS3-1, 3-LS3-2

Cross Cutting Concepts: (LS1-1) Patterns of change can be used to make predictions.   (LS2-1, LS3-2) Cause and effect relationships are routinely identified and used to explain change. (LS3-1) Similarities and differences in patterns can be used to sort and classify natural phenomena .

Disciplinary Core Ideas:  (3-LS1-1) Reproduction is essential to the continued existence of every kind of organism.  Plants and animals have unique and diverse life cycles. (LS2-1) Being part of a group helps animals obtain food, defend themselves, and cope with changes.  Groups may serve different functions and vary dramatically in size. (LS3-1, 2) Traits are often inherited and can vary.

Practices of Science: Modeling, engaging in arguments using evidence, analyzing and interpreting data, conducting explanations and designing solutions.

Vocabulary:  acquired, behavior, change, characteristic, compare, organism, develop, environment, inherited, gene, offspring, parent, physical, trait

3-LS3-1 Heredity: Inheritance and Variation of Traits

  • Grade: 3rd Grade
  • Discipline: Life Science
Requirements:
Analyze and interpret data to provide evidence that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms.
